First game of Panzer8 Sci-Fi about to start

Postby MKGipson » Sun Oct 11, 2015 11:14 am

Approx. 265 points per side

Trying a smaller game to get a feel for the rules. Two combined arms forces - one attacking, one defending.

The "defenders" are a group of opportunists who have forcefully taken over an archeological dig site.

The "attackers" are coming to try and drive the opportunists away and/or destroy them.

Now to get my son out of bed, get him awake, fed and then we can play!

Fun game! After about 2 1/2 hours or so my son annihilated my forces. Ouch!

The attacking Medium and Light Walkers approach what became known as "The Pocket of Death"

Lost the first "gravity effect vehicle" (VTOL) early - hammers in eggshells for sure

To the left is where Walkers went to die. To the right is a bunch of heavy hovertanks facing the same fate...

I have fun playing but man, my dice hate me.

Finally got an enemy mech. My dice rolling for hits was awful.

The rules might see a little tweaking - not sure why hover tanks don't get a road bonus. Probably will create a few more vehicle types - like medium tanks/hovertanks with heavy guns. Definitely going to be played more.

Looks Great. Glad to see this game coming up again.

PZ8 is a fun game that we should play again sometime.

My son (age 20) and I enjoyed it. The ruleset is simple and doesn't bog the play down. Lots of carnage once the forces get mixed up but still allows for strategy and tactics to be used. We both ran into situations where our tanks got flanked, so that rule worked well.

I think I will tweak the movement of the hover tanks to speed them up a little, maybe allow them a road bonus - but - disallow them from rough terrain. I will also probably create a few more vehicle combinations - like medium tanks with a large gun or light tanks with a medium gun - sort of "tank destroyer" type vehicles. I added bike and trike squads from the pieces I had from MechWarrior. They make for a fast moving recon type force that still has the weakness of infantry. I need more of them. :)

I tried some APC action with debarking infantry but offloaded the infantry too soon. If I had hung on longer I might have gotten my Marines into an advantageous situation. Infantry can be powerful in this game - but not overpowered.

VTOLs (the Gravity Effect Vehicles) are fun. I need more. I tried using mine to draw my son's forces out but he was too canny to take the bait.

It was the CSW blogs that got me onto this ruleset. I will be playing with it more.

Thanks, folks!

Great photo Essay. I wasn't blown away with PZ8 first time we played it as a group. But I would be willing to try it again. Maybe some hybrid of Mech Attack for Mechs and PZ8 for infantry/vehicles would be interesting.

On a hobby front, what did you use for the hex bases on your 'Mechs?

For the bases I cut 2 inch hexes out of a plastic "For Sale By Owner" sign purchased from Home Depot. Two layers of the sign material glued together with super glue makes a good base. I did not base the vehicles because I prefer them unbased.

Thanks. I was hoping for premade. But, those look good.

You're right. Most of thr Mechwarrior vehicles do look pretty good un based. That will be something to look at when I get around to converting my ROTS army.

Now I'm making a bunch of Dropzone Commander urban buildings for a city fight. They are pretty cool!
